Marmalade & Mirthwerx Team Up for Catch the Monkey

Today Mirthwerx is proud to announce we will be working with Marmalade to publish Catch the Monkey to Android, Playbook, and other platforms.

Catch the Monkey is the adorable monkey tickling action game.  Players distract increasing kinds of monkeys with hilarious tools all in an effort to save the Farmer’s potato fields.

Marmalade is the maker of the best cross platform development tools for games.  We chose Marmalade for the creation of Catch the Monkey based on the maturity of the SDK, working in Visual Studio C++, and testing tools.  We plan to build on our Marmalade expertise in future titles.

Catch the Monkey will be in the App Store in Jan 2012, with other platforms to follow shortly.

The Pac-Man Problem of Game Testing

For those that don’t know, there is no actual ending to the game Pac Man (or many other classic arcade games).  The game simply freezes once you beat the 256th level.  Why is this?  Because the game developers never tested the game that far.

When I first heard this, I thought it is a funny and somewhat ridiculous story.  Now that we’re in the final stretch before releasing, each day involves testing the game through multiple times on multiple devices.  It takes a very long time and is fairly tedious.

So Pac-Man team: I forgive you!  I completely understand, now, why you didn’t test that far in your game.

Game Design: Does the world really need mobile Diablo Clones?

In recent evenings I’ve gone through the app store role playing category.  There are about 800 games to wade through and I’ve been trying the ones that interest me.  After playing several, I’m struck by a consistent thought: Seriously, do we need Diablo clones on a mobile device?!
